Born in Durham City in 1877, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 4 (Militia) DLI in 1898. He served in the Boer War, 1900-01, attached to 1 DLI and was promoted to Captain in 1900. During the Great War, he served with 2 DLI for nineteen days before he was badly wounded in January 1915 in the trenches at Houplines. After recovering, he commanded a Garrison unit in the Mediterranean and then returned to the Western Front with 12 DLI. In late 1917, he returned home as Second-in-Command of 3 DLI, a position he held until 1919. The medals of Samuel Rowlandson's father and brother are also on display.
